Learn Both the Practice and Business of Law:

What We Do, You Do!

When you article at Low Murchison Radnoff LLP (LMR), you will gain hands-on experience with your own caseload.  You will work alongside our lawyers and participate in a meaningful way in all aspects of their practices.  You will attend and conduct meetings with clients, attend Court and Tribunal hearings, argue motions, review leases, draft wills and conduct Small Claims Court trials.  You will assist with the purchase and sale of a business, close a real estate transaction and draft a will and power of attorney.

You will also learn how to manage and docket your time and how to render statements of account (and get them paid!).  You will be given the opportunity to participate on the firm’s Committees and be welcomed at the Practice Group meetings.  When the Lawyers’ Meetings are called every other month, you’ll be there at the table learning about the firm’s day-to-day operations and longer term plans.

In short, you become part of our team, learning not only about the practice of law but also the business of law.

Invitations for interviews will be sent out shortly thereafter, with interviews to be conducted from June 2, 2015 to June 12, 2015.

The County of Carleton Law Association and Great Canadian Theatre Company’s 16th Annual Lawyer Play Fundraiser

This week, Carol Cochrane of our Family Law Group, is taking to the stage at the Great Canadian Theatre Company, performing in the Annual Lawyer Play Fundraiser. This year’s show is “Parfumerie,” a light-hearted romantic comedy that was the inspiration for the movie, “You’ve Got Mail.” The proceeds raised will be used to support the good work of the GCTC and to provide support to “Street Smarts,” a grass roots charity dedicated to providing basic necessities to the homeless members of the Ottawa community. The show will be running from April 16th to 18th. Tickets for the Gala Performances are $100 each and are available from the GCTC Box Office.Annual Lawyer Play Flyer

Legal Fees that are Tax Deductible in Family Law Matters
No one looks forward to paying out large sums of money to lawyers, however being able to deduct the expense on your income tax return, definitely softens the blow. So when are legal fees deductible in the context of a family law matter?
Legal fees associated with the breakdown of the relationship are deductible only in the following circumstances:

  •  To establish a right to child or spousal support under the Divorce Act or the Family Law Act;
  •  To increase the amount of child or spousal support under the Divorce Act or the Family Law Act;
  •  To enforce an existing court order or written agreement to collect late spousal or child support;
  •  To resist the payor’s attempt to reduce spousal or child support;
  •  To make child support non-taxable under the Child Support Guidelines.

In general terms, whenever you can deduct an amount for legal fees, you must include as income, any later award that repays you for all or part of those fees.

The CRA has an interpretation bulletin IT-99R5 entitled “Legal and Accounting Fees” which is a helpful read that outlines when both legal and accounting fees are deductible to a tax payor.
